Where wine challenges the mountains

Among all of Italy’s wine regions, none shares such an intimate relationship with the mountains as the Aosta Valley.

Here, vineyards climb the Alpine slopes, following terraces patiently carved over centuries to transform narrow strips of land into places where vines could flourish.

It is Italy’s smallest wine-producing region.

Yet it is also one of its most spectacular.

TheValle d’Aosta DOC, established in 1971, encompasses the entire region’s wine production under a single appellation, divided into numerous subzones and wines that reflect the extraordinary diversity of this Alpine landscape.

Vineyards stretch from around 300 to well above 1,200 metres above sea level, making them among the highest in Europe.

Every metre changes the wine.

Altitude slows ripening.

Large day-to-night temperature swings preserve freshness and aromatic intensity.

The surrounding mountains shelter the vineyards from the coldest winds, while the remarkably dry climate naturally reduces many of the vine’s most common diseases.

Here, growing grapes means working on steep slopes, stone terraces and narrow vineyard parcels where nearly every task must still be performed by hand.

It is one of the purest expressions ofheroic viticulture.

Yet the mountains are not a limitation.

They are the region’s greatest treasure.

Because here, wine is not made in pursuit of quantity.

It is made in search of purity.

THE GRAPES OF THE ALPS

A heritage found nowhere else

The Aosta Valley preserves one of Italy’s most remarkable collections of native grape varieties.

Many of them are virtually unknown beyond the region itself.

Petit Rougeis the heart of Aosta Valley viticulture, producing some of the region’s most elegant red wines.

Alongside it grow varieties such asFumin,Cornalin,Mayolet,Premetta,Vuillerminand many others, each reflecting centuries of adaptation to the Alpine environment.

Among the whites,Prié Blancstands apart.

Cultivated at some of the highest elevations in Europe, it retains extraordinary freshness while expressing the purity that only mountain vineyards can achieve.

Here, grape varieties are far more than an agricultural resource.

They are the living memory of the Alps.

BETWEEN GLACIERS AND THE SKY

When altitude becomes identity

Nowhere else in Italy are the mountains so constantly present.

Every vineyard lives beneath peaks rising above four thousand metres.

Mont Blanc.

Monte Rosa.

The Matterhorn.

Gran Paradiso.

These mountains are far more than a dramatic backdrop.

They shape every aspect of viticulture.

The light is more intense.

The air is drier.

Temperature swings are greater.

The rhythm of the seasons is entirely different from the rest of Italy.

From this extraordinary environment come wines defined by precision, freshness and elegance.

Never excessive.

Never heavy.

Always unmistakably Alpine.

And perhaps that is the true secret of the Aosta Valley.

Here, the mountains are never conquered.

They are understood.

Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle

Where vines grow closest to the sky

There are wine regions that are famous for the greatness of their wines.

Others are remembered for the uniqueness of their landscape.

Blanc de Morgex et de La Salleis unforgettable for both.

Nestled at the foot ofMont Blanc, this tiny appellation is home to some of the highest vineyards in Europe, with vines reaching nearly1,200 metres above sea level.

At these elevations, viticulture becomes something extraordinary.

Winters are long and severe.

The growing season is remarkably short.

Every vintage is a challenge.

Yet the vines have adapted to these extreme conditions over centuries, producing wines unlike any others in Italy.

TheBlanc de Morgex et de La Salle DOC, established in 1983, is produced exclusively fromPrié Blanc, an ancient native grape variety that has become the symbol of Alpine white wine.

Its wines are delicate, vibrant and crystalline, expressing freshness and purity with remarkable elegance.

Here, wine is not shaped by power.

It is shaped by altitude.
