Where time takes shape
Between Brescia and Lake Iseo, on gentle hills formed by the retreat of ancient glaciers,Franciacortaunfolds with a natural ease that conceals its precision. The landscape is orderly, but never rigid. Vineyards follow continuous lines, accompanied by light that shifts throughout the day and a climate moderated by the presence of water.
Here, wine is not defined at the moment of harvest. It begins there, but takes shape elsewhere.
Franciacortais where the Italian traditional method finds its most complete expression. It is not a matter of technique, but of time. The wine passes through multiple stages, multiple transformations, multiple periods of waiting. Each change is slow, controlled, invisible.
The grapes are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and, to a lesser extent, Pinot Blanc. Varieties that allow a balance between freshness and structure, between precision and depth.
The territory plays a central role. Morainic soils, rich in sand, silt and gravel, ensure drainage and lightness. They do not weigh the wine down, but keep it dynamic.
In the glass,Franciacortanever seeks immediate impact. It works through continuity. The bubble is fine, integrated. The palate moves with precision, supported by a structure that never overwhelms.
It is a wine that does not show itself. It is built.
The discipline of precision
FranciacortaDOCGis one of the most rigorous appellations in Italy, yet its strength does not lie in rigidity. It lies in coherence.
The method is bottle refermentation, with no shortcuts. Every step is defined, every phase measured.
The basic versions require a minimum ageing of 18 months on the lees. Satèn and Rosé follow similar timelines, while vintage expressions require at least 30 months. Riserva wines extend beyond 60 months.
These are not decorative numbers. They are the core of the wine.
Yields are also controlled, to maintain concentration without losing elegance. The final dosage varies, but must never dominate the wine. It must accompany it.
The disciplinare does not impose a style. It defines a direction.
And that direction is clear: precision, balance, time.
Traditional Method and Charmat Method
Two different ways of thinking about time
Not all sparkling wines are made in the same way.
The difference is not only in taste, but in the process that creates them.
TheTraditional Method, used inFranciacortaand in some of the most complex expressions of wine, involves a second fermentation in the bottle. After the first fermentation, the wine is bottled together with yeast and sugar. It is inside the bottle that pressure forms, that the bubble is created.
This step requires time. The yeasts work slowly, settle, and release compounds that enrich the wine. Ageing can last years. And during this time, the wine evolves, layers itself, gains depth.
TheCharmat Methodfollows a different path. The second fermentation takes place in a pressurised stainless steel tank. The process is faster, more controlled, designed to preserve freshness and immediacy.
The result is a more direct wine, lighter, with aromas more closely tied to fruit and less shaped by time.
It is not a matter of absolute quality.
It is a matter of intention.
TheTraditional Methodworks through transformation.
TheCharmat Methodworks through preservation.
The first builds complexity through waiting.
The second protects freshness through speed.
Two different ways of interpreting wine.
Two different ways of thinking about time.
Time in the bottle
When waiting becomes language
Franciacortais not understood by looking at it. It is understood by waiting for it.
The second fermentation takes place in the bottle, out of sight. The yeasts work slowly, transforming the wine, reshaping its structure. It is a silent process.
During ageing, time does not pass. It settles.
A texture forms that is not immediate. Aromas that do not arrive all at once, but build gradually. A depth that does not come from weight, but from layering.
By the time the wine is disgorged, everything has already happened. What reaches the glass is the result of time that cannot be accelerated.
And this is what definesFranciacorta.
Not the bubble.
Not the method.
But the waiting.
